Dressing the Part: The Guide to Dress for an Interview and Job

The following article will give you tips and tricks for looking your best at that big interview and/or job.

Putting together the perfect outfit for an interview can be extremely stressful. The first step in creating your outfit is to identify the type of interview you are attending. The dress for a business interview will be far different than what you would wear for an exterminator job or a construction job. The following tips will be mostly in regard to a business interview.

For the Women:

Dress

There is a healthy debate about what a woman should wear to an interview. Highly traditional people believe that a woman should wear a skirt suit as pants are still not accepted by certain people in the work force. I completely disagree with this argument. I myself wore a nice pants suit and did just fine in my interview. My first choice would be a suit. This will make you look very professional and give a very conservative refined look. All suits should be black, navy or gray. Loud colors such as red, purple and green will call the wrong kind of attention to you. You are welcome however to wear those colors as blouses under a jacket (but make them lower toned not very bright). If you choose to not go the route of a suit and instead opt for skirt and blouse or pants and blouse just make sure that you are completely covered.

Shoes

Always closed toe, although a small peep toe may be acceptable. Also make sure that it is a small heel. People often make the mistake of wearing a wonderful suit and ruining it with very high stelletoes. Either wear stockings or dress socks based on the shoe you wear. I wore knee highs because I can't stand stockings with my pants suit.

Do's and Dont's

Don't wear revealing blouses. Keep you assets covered.

Don't wear loud colors.

Don't wear large earrings or anything that would take attention away from your qualifications

Don't wear short skirts. All skirts should be at least knee length.

Don't wear tight clothing.

Do get a simple manicure. (The little details matter).

Do iron your clothes before the interview.
