Dressing Up Your Dresser

Dress Up Your Dresser with 20 Delightful DIYs | Home decor, Diy ...

So often we hear of people who put off redecorating because they just don’t have the time or money to hire an interior decorator. What they don’t realize is they don’t need to hire a decorator, buy new furniture, or spend thousands of dollars and hours redecorating! The furniture you already have may be older and out of date, but it is very easy to make old furniture modern with just a little elbow grease. Just take each piece of furniture, one at a time, and update it. The best place to start is with your bedroom, and what better piece than your dresser?

If you dresser is like mine, it is your classic 80’s furniture: big and bulky, glossy oak, with Victorian (and squeaky) drawer pulls. Back in the day, it was very elegant to have several large pieces of furniture that were all the same wood and from a matching set. Oak is probably the most popular that you will find, but there are other types of wood that were used as well. If the functionality of your dresser is still there, meaning, the drawers work well still and there aren’t any huge defects, then all you need is:

  • Spray paint
  • New drawer handles
  • Screwdriver

The color of the spray paint you want to purchase depends on the color scheme of the room your dresser is in. Teal is a really popular color right now, and that would look great with some bronze handles. If you really want a modern look, a matte black spray paint with brushed silver drawer handles looks wonderful. The silver really stands out against the black, but the overall look adds well to the room rather than being the center of attention.

Start by removing everything from the drawers of the dresser, and from the top of the dresser. Take each of the drawers out and go set them on top of the surface you will be painting on. Make sure to have someone help you move the rest of the dresser to your painting area as well. Start with the drawers; using your screwdriver, unscrew and remove each handle and pull. After you have finished, use your spray paint and evenly coat the face of the drawer. Don’t forget to pay close attention to the corners! If you can still see the original color through the layer of paint you just applied, you can always add another coat when it has finished drying. Next, spray paint the top, sides, and front of the dresser body. The same idea applies here as well if you feel another coat is needed. When the paint has dried you can attach the new modern handles that you purchased.

This may sound silly, but the key to dressing up your dresser is with the modern handles and pulls. If you want to find the perfect set to match your “new” dresser, just visit BC Hardware Supply online and choose from their immense selection of modern knobs, pulls, and handles.
