Technology – for Better or for Worse?

I believe that the benefits of technology will always outweigh the costs no matter what the situation. The benefits of technology are hardly refutable which has made life better in every way. Various examples include cell phones which allows for instant communication and computers which gives access to a wealth of information. Technology’s benefits outweighs its cost because it’s efficient, helps feed the insatiable desire to advance, and increases the quality of life for people everywhere.

One of technology’s main highlights is its efficiency. Take for example the history of calculators which has come a long way. The “difference machine” made in the 19th century was much bigger than today’s average sized calculator. In two centuries, calculators have not only become smaller, but more efficient with added features. Your average calculator can now perform in terms with order of operations, trigonometry, and more. This highlights one of the many successes made on efficiency, but the advancement won’t end there. With every coming year, efficiency will only improve to be better and better.

Technology isn’t only for efficiency, but feeds on our own thirst to progress. We have all heard of the great inventors and thinkers of all times, but if there’s one thing they all had in common, then it is there insatiable desire to progress and advance. There’s a saying that goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” which is what describes this desire to progress. This quality isn’t for technology’s sake, but for our own. If everyone sat around doing nothing hoping someone else would get it done, nothing would ever get done and if one hundred years passed, then one hundred years passed as if that was nothing. There would be no progress or change for the better. Luckily, we are not like this, we thrive on our curiosity which is why humans have dominated so well.

Technology also improves the quality of life everywhere. Everyday, people die around the world due to old age and disease. Many however are saved by the technological advances that are made everyday like the sonogram or other such equipment. Also it helps on our advances in fields of study where things are on a cellular level or planetal levels where things are too small or too big to observe and speculate causes and effects. Cellular research has already taught us much about the cells and how DNA works and we are now able to observe faraway stars and can speculate on theories about details of the beginning of “time.” Without the advancement of technology, we would never be able to do that. Let alone even the use of cell phones, we might still be stuck in a medieval age.
