How to Make Cornbread Dressing

  • Tips
    1. Instead of making cornbread, an easy substitute is cornbread stuffing cubes.
    2. Cornbread dressing can be frozen for later use.
    3. Consider adding a leftover biscuit or a couple of pieces of bread to the cornbread mixture for a different texture.
  • Step 1: How to Make Cornbread

Start by greasing a Cast Iron Skillet with Crisco.

    • Gather the following ingredients:
    • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
    • 1/4cup vegetable oil
    • 1 egg
    • 1 3/4 cup white cornmeal
    • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
    • 1 tsp baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • 1 tsp salt

How to Make Cornbread

    1. Heat greased cast iron skillet to 425 degrees.
    2. Mix together dry ingredients.
    3. Whisk together wet ingredients.
    4. Mix dry goods with wet. The mixture will be a bit lumpy.
    5. Pour cornbread mixture into hot skillet.
    6. Cook until golden brown, about 20-30 minutes.
  • Step 2: How to Make Cornbread Dressing from the Cornbread

Grease a 9X13 glass baking dish.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl, crumble cornbread and add the following:

    • 2 stalks celery, diced
    • 1 cup diced onion
    • 1 T poultry seasoning
    • 1 T sage

Mix above items into the crumbled cornbread.
Add 5 cups chicken broth.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Stir until mixed.
There should be enough broth to have it standing around the cornbread mix but not in large quantities.

Pour into prepared dish and bake for about 1 hour until the liquid no longer stands around the edges and the bread is browned.

  • Step 3: Make it a Meal or an Appetizer

Cornbread dressing can be a side dish for the big Thanksgiving dinner or it can be the main course item or appetizer. To turn your dressing into the main course, add two cups of diced chicken or turkey to the dressing. You may need to add extra broth to make the casserole mix a soupy texture before baking. Mix chicken gravy from a store bought pack or make your own from broth and serve over the cornbread dressing.

To make cornbread dressing an appetizer, spray a mini muffin tin with non-stick spray. Drop the dressing mixture into the tins and bake for 15 minutes at 375 or until golden brown. Do a toothpick check to be sure the dressing bites are done. Serve with a gravy dip. Appetizer bites with best without the addition of meat.
